FIRE STEEL
Fire Steel is for you!
Constructed from 1095 steel, it is heat treated to be used as a versatile fire starting tool!
Designed to be used as a flint striker it has ground edges to be used by normal ferrocerium strikers and also has a recess for the bow!
THREE TOOLS IN ONE
FLINT STRIKER
Use it to break a natural flint think and get a sharp edge.
Then take your piece of charred cotton and place it on the edge of the flint.
Now lightly tap the flint with the Fire Steel.
If you apply too much force you will break the flint.
Once struck correctly the flint will shave off a microscopic portion of the Fire Steel and in the process the piece of steel turns into a spark that will go upwards.
Continue striking until the spark is caught in the charred cotton, at which point blow lightly to expand the embers and gently place it inside the tinder, coiling it and blowing until it catches fire.
STRIKER FOR FERROCERIO
The edge of the Fire Steel is right angled making it ideal for use with ferrocerium rods.
Beyond this, given the size, you will have a much more comfortable grip than with the supplied strikers.
Simply position the Fire Steel creating an acute angle to create as much friction as possible and then use the method you like best, pushing the steel or pulling the ferrocerium!
HANDLE FOR THE BOW
Hold the Fire Steel in one hand with the notch facing down and insert the bow shaft into the notch.
You will have a perfect and smooth surface for rotation.
Due to friction the metal will tend to heat up and therefore it may be necessary to cover the steel in contact with the hand with green leaves or use a glove.
BONUS TOOL:
CONTAINER
The metal container with which Fire Steel is packaged can be used to create charred cotton or char other natural releases directly in the field.
Once properly charred the material will tend to catch sparks more easily and therefore make it easier to light a fire.
Then consider that you will have to carry the charred material in a waterproof container.
