STANDARD SOLAR	SOLAR RING
The most commonly used cell. It is located directly under the dial. Thanks to its excellent solar capabilities it is used in many models with advanced capabilities	This cell sits above the dial and surrounds it. With this typology it is not necessary for the dial to be translucent and therefore allows greater freedom in the design.

For years, the incessant pursuit of reducing consumption has driven the creation of advanced functions and other innovations!

INSUFFICIENT CHARGE WARNING	ENERGY SAVING FUNCTION
Thanks to this function we will be notified when the watch is about to run out of battery. As? It will move the second hand in two-second intervals instead of one.	This function temporarily stops the hands to save energy when the cell is not exposed to light for a certain period. It makes the long life of ECO Drive possible! Once the light is revealed the hands come back to life!

LIGHT LEVEL INDICATOR

Citizen was the first company in the world to integrate a light indicator into its analog watches!
The indicator reveals the intensity of light hitting the dial and shows the level of energy produced!

A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY

1970

A watch that doesn't need batteries, but only light.
This was the challenge that CITIZEN set itself in the 1970s, when the market was dominated by battery-powered quartz watches.
These watches, however, had the disadvantage of requiring the replacement and disposal of used batteries.
CITIZEN wanted to create something different and better, an eco-friendly and innovative watch, powered by light.

1974 - 1976

In the mid-1970s, solar cells were bulky and prone to cracking. Incorporating them into something as small as a watch wasn't easy.
But after many experiments and more than a few dead ends, in 1974 CITIZEN presented a prototype design of a light-powered analog quartz watch. Two years later, in 1976, they introduced the CRYSTRON SOLAR CELL, the world's first light-powered commercial watch. quartz analog watch.

1986

In the 1980s, solar cells became thinner and began producing energy from artificial light as well . Batteries have also become longer lasting.

These advancements have allowed CITIZEN solar-powered watches to evolve.

The goal was to create "a watch that never stops and that adapts to everyday life ". In 1986, they introduced a model that lasted eight days (about 200 hours) on a single charge.
In 1995, they introduced a lithium-ion battery that provided six months of battery life on a single full charge . This was a decisive step that led to today's Eco-Drive.
