SHEMAGH, KEFIA OR SCARF?

Many are confused by the quantity of nouns with which we indicate this sort of scarf, but it's normal. It is called Keffiyeh, Kufiya, Ghutrah, Hattan, Yamegh, Mashdan, Igal, Chafiye... It depends on the area and the local language. (you keep some of these names to show off at the NDT airsoft club)

THE HISTORY OF SHEMAGH

It seems that the first to use the shemagh were already the Sumerians and the Babylonians, the first evidence of this accessory dates back to 800 BC. The first shemaghs were made of wool to protect themselves from the sand and sun, but also from the cold of the night.

In the 1930s, shemagh was worn Palestinian resistance against Britain. The reason was practical because it allowed the rebels to hide their identity with a very common leader in that area.

In the 80s with the first Intifada against Israel the media focused a lot on characters and populations who wore the shemagh, encouraging its diffusion.

During the First Gulf War US and British special forces recognized the usefulness of the shemagh and they began to use it too.

THE SHEMAGH BETWEEN FASHION AND STYLE

There are shemags of all shapes and colors, if you are choosing one make sure its unique design does not represent a meaning. For example, a red or green checkerboard could be interpreted as a political affiliation in some regions. (so do your homework or buy it on BackPacco :-) NDT)
